What was approved

The Hillsborough Transportation Planning Organization voted October 14 to amend its fiscal 2026–2030 Transportation Improvement Program for six electric commercial-truck charging spaces at the new I-4 truck parking facility on County Line Road. The amendment allows the Florida Department of Transportation project to advance within the regional transportation plan.

Plan Hillsborough's project notice and October agenda packet identify six electric-truck spaces at the facility. FOX 13 reports that the charging work is supported by a $24.7 million federal grant and that FDOT plans to coordinate with Tampa Electric on the high-voltage power supply.

What it means for drivers

The project would add a future heavy-duty charging stop along I-4, a major freight route connecting Tampa-area port and distribution activity with central Florida and destinations beyond. The six spaces are aimed at commercial trucks rather than ordinary passenger-vehicle charging.

The approval does not create an operating charging site today. Drivers should not route an electric truck to the County Line Road facility based on this announcement and should continue confirming charger access, connector compatibility, power level, parking rules and availability before dispatch.

Schedule and open questions

Local officials told FOX 13 that design is scheduled to start in 2027 and construction is expected to begin in 2028. No opening date was announced, and normal design, utility, procurement and construction steps still have to occur.

The reviewed records do not identify the charging-equipment vendor, final power rating, access policy or price drivers will pay. Those details require later confirmation from FDOT, the TPO or the eventual operator.
