What Kodiak announced

Kodiak AI named the roughly 219-mile Dallas–Houston corridor as its next planned long-haul driverless launch lane. The company says it intends to begin unsupervised commercial service by the end of 2026.

Current preparation runs on Interstate 45 still carry a human safety observer. Kodiak says those daily freight runs have been completed without the observer touching the steering wheel, but that company statement does not mean driver-out service has already begun.

How the plan is being qualified

Kodiak reported that its internally developed safety case for the corridor was 93% complete at the end of August and said it plans to reach 100% before launch. That percentage is the company's own readiness measure, not a government certification or independent safety rating.

The company has not announced an exact launch date. Its year-end goal, safety-case completion and commercial rollout are forward-looking plans that could change as testing, operations and customer preparations continue.

What it means for drivers

Drivers on I-45 may already encounter Kodiak trucks operating with a safety observer during preparation runs. The announcement does not change CDL rules, hours-of-service requirements or the obligations of other drivers sharing the route.

For fleets and drivers, the important distinction is current supervised operation versus planned unsupervised service. Any verified removal of the safety observer, route expansion or customer launch would be a separate operating milestone.
