What the September report shows

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 1.4731 million seasonally adjusted jobs in truck transportation for September, up from a revised 1.4705 million in August. That is a month-over-month increase of 2,600 jobs.

The September 2025 level was 1.4723 million, so the preliminary September 2026 estimate is about 800 jobs higher year over year. The broader transportation and warehousing sector added 7,600 jobs over the month.

What the number does not show

The BLS truck-transportation series measures payroll employment at establishments classified in NAICS 484. It is not a count of CDL drivers alone; the total also includes other payroll jobs at covered trucking establishments.

The estimate is seasonally adjusted and preliminary. It does not count every owner-operator as a payroll employee, establish how many workers were hired or laid off by a specific carrier, or show whether pay, schedules or freight demand improved for an individual driver.

Why drivers should care

A positive monthly change and a small year-over-year gain suggest industry payrolls held slightly above the prior-year level, but the 800-job difference is only about one-tenth of one percent. Drivers should treat the release as a broad labor-market signal rather than proof that openings are expanding in every lane or region.

Applicants should still verify the carrier, compensation method, expected miles, home-time policy, equipment, benefits, deductions and employee-versus-contractor status before accepting a position.
